Wednesday, June 28th

This morning the students split up into sectional rehearsals in order to get some of the finer points worked out on the music.  During this time, auditions were held for the drama roles that are a part of this musical.  For the first time, these lines will be recorded by students at SonPower and released on the musical CD in the fall.  I saw Nan Allen not long after the auditions and she spoke very positively about all of our students that read lines.  Later this afternoon a call-back list was posted and four of our students have a second audition tomorrow:  Jared, Stephanie, Shelby, and Rachel Dyer.

The next stop for our day was the soup kitchen at the Austin Baptist Chapel.  I believe we served over 200 meals from 11:00-12:30.  Half of the crew served at a time while the other half mingled and visited with those eating the meal.  We met a lot of kind hearted people who appreciated a simple conversation and smile from someone.  Remind me sometime to tell you the story of Cameron "Iceman".  During the last half of the serving time, several students formed an impromptu ensemble and sang a lot of songs, which were enthusiastically and warmly received.  I personally observed some of these road-hardened, rough-around-the edges men and women with tears rolling down their cheeks as the students sang.  You can see some video of the serving crew {here}

The afternoon was filled with a fun trip to Austin's Park.  You can find a link with information about this amusement complex on the main page for our trip.  I don't have most of the pictures from that time today, but here's what I've got for now.  Check back later for more.

Then we made a grocery run before heading back to our hotel to cleanup and relax for an hour or so.  Tonight was our special trip downtown to Austin's famed 6th Street Music district.  Half of the group went to a Jazz themed Cajun restaurant and the other half at Tex-Mex on the second story observation deck of the "Iron Cactus"  Afterwards we all enjoyed one of the many street bands that could be heard tonight.  You can watch and listen to a little of it on video below.
